Every Bus Driver must perform a pre-trip and post-trip inspection on the bus, i.e. prior to the commencement and at the end of his/her shift. The aim is to do a general visual inspection of the vehicle and check that the vehicle is in good condition, note and report any defect on the bus.
An external visual inspection is performed by the security and workshop personnel at the gate on every vehicle leaving and entering the depot.This checklist inspection covers the bus body, tyres and includes checks such as fire extinguishers and reflector triangle. Any damage or problem is noted and reported to the workshops to be rectified.

We follow a scientifically designed preventative maintenance programme whereby vehicles go through a range of different inspections and services based on set frequencies (time or kilometres). On a daily basis busses are washed, refuelled, oil, water and tyre checks are conducted and reported defects are repaired in the Running Repair Section of each workshop prior to the bus being sent out on the next shift.
NO BUS WITH A CRITICAL SAFETY DEFECT IS ALLOWED TO OPERATE

The emphasis is on safer driving techniques and aims to address root causes of accidents/complaints. We are also recalling every driver to come back every two years for reassessment and retraining. Senior drivers are called upon as Sheppard drivers to mentor new drivers.
To increase our safety standards we provide ongoing training to our current instructors who are qualified facilitators; assessors and some are moderators. We embarked on an Accident Campaign project,where a detailed presentation with visuals was presented to every Business unit, both operations and drivers in particular viewed this. Our stats indicate that the impact of this project resulted in a reduction of accidents overall.
